Matteo Calabrese

Matteo Calabrese is an economic historian with a background in Economics and History from Utrecht and Leiden Universities. He earned his PhD in financial history from the University of Luxembourg, where he focused on the emergence of investment funds in small states. His research explores financial and long-run economic history, with interests ranging from the development of global financial hubs to labor history and the roots of economic growth.


He has published in journals such as Contemporary European History, Italian Economic Journal, Historical Methods, and most recently in the Business History Review. Matteo has held academic positions as a lecturer at the University of Turin and a postdoctoral researcher at Bocconi University. He is currently a research associate at Freie Universität Berlin.


He has also been a visiting fellow at National Chengchi University in Taipei, the International Institute of Social History (IISG) in Amsterdam, and the Centre d’histoire at Sciences Po in Paris.
