Academic Freedom under Pressure
Andrea Binder joins a public discussion in Berlin on current pressures on academic freedom and how academia, media and civil society can respond.

On 6 October 2026, Andrea Binder takes part in the first event of the new FREIHEITSMONITOR series at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW). The event, Wie steht’s gerade um die Wissenschaftsfreiheit?, brings together researchers and representatives from academia and the media to discuss current pressures on academic freedom and ways of strengthening its protection.
The panel brings together Andrea Binder, Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, Justus Henke from the Institute for Higher Education Research (HoF), and Maximilian Steinbeis, founder of Verfassungsblog. The discussion is moderated by Hanna Pfeifer and Manuel J. Hartung.
The discussion builds on Andrea Binder’s recent engagement with questions of academic freedom and the resilience of academic institutions. In workshops and public contributions, including a recent article in DIE ZEIT, she has explored how universities and researchers can prepare for political pressure and what can be learned from experiences in other countries.
Following the panel, participants continue the discussion at thematic tables together with representatives of WissDem, FragDenStaat and the German Society for Civil Rights (GFF). FREIHEITSMONITOR is a joint series by the BBAW, Die Junge Akademie and ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS.
